Seoul Amsadong Historic sites
Greetings from Gangdong-gu Office.
I am Mayor Lee Hae-sik of Gangdong-gu.
The Mayor
The Amsa-dong site, which represents the prehistoric era in Korea, is the largest group settlement site in the Hangang River basin and retains outstanding historical value More than 40 house sites, clearly bearing the traces of the fishing and gathering lifestyle of people in the Neolithic Age, have been discovered after several excavations. The Neolithic people formed a village in Amsa-dong and thrived in a highly innovative and artistic culture of comb-pattern pottery.
We are working for the inclusion of the traces of prehistoric people’s settlement and comb-pattern pottery in Amsa-dong in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites so that the site may be appreciated by people throughout the world. We bring light to the academic values of the Amsa-dong site through excavations, international conferences, etc.; carry out maintenance work of the relics to restore the prehistoric environment; and are currently engaged in remodeling of the exhibition hall. We will also seek a new direction for development toward the harmony between Neolithic culture and the surrounding ecological environment by setting up Amsa History and Culture Park and Amsa Green Trail
Various prehistoric experience programs offered at the Prehistoric Experience Village will send you straight back to the Neolithic Age of 6,000 years ago. For tourists, educational programs such as the Commentary on Cultural Heritage, Amsa History and Culture College, and Exploration of Cultural Heritage are provided.
It will be a space for comfortable rest and learning of culture for Seoul citizens weary of the city life and a place for a vivid prehistoric experience for our children.
We look forward to your active visits to the site and participation in the programs offered by the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement Site, where the ancient community spirit and culture of comb-pattern pottery remain alive. Thank you.
