Relics including jade ornaments unearthed from
the neolithic settlement site in Amsa-dong, Seoul
-First excavation survey of the Amsa-dong site in 41 years-

Traces of dwelling in the neolithic age and the Three Kingdoms Period were found at the excavation site in Amsa-dong, Seoul, along with over 1,000 pieces of relics. The excavation has been carried out by the Gangdong-gu with financial support from the government and the city and under cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It’s the first academic excavation survey of the Amsa-dong site in 41 years.
The site of the current excavation survey is located around 100m south from the center of the historical site (exhibition hall and restored dugout huts) where a survey was held in the 1970s,  and here, traces of six dwellings have been newly discovered. The Amsa-dong site is assumed to have been much larger than the area that has already been investigated, forming an extensive settlement site. Considering the size of the population, it is suggested that the site may have included relevant facilities such as tombs in addition to dwellings.
Notably, a fire pit site made by piling stones was found at the center of neolithic dwelling no. 5, and jade ornaments were unearthed from dwelling no. 2. The jade ornaments are expected to help shed light on the unknown prehistoric culture of the middle and lower reaches of the Han River including the Amsa-dong site.
Mayor Lee Hae-sik of Gangdong-gu said, “It is expected that the excavation survey and the international conference, which will be held in October, will help us find out new value for the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement Site. In the future, we will work hard to enable more residents to learn about and make use of the value of the Amsa-dong site through cooperation with relevant agencies.”
